John W. Hanlen and Family

John W. Hanlen came to Cowley County from Tipton, Iowa, May 8, 1876, and settled on a farm two miles north of Akron. On September 30, 1879, Celia N. Lyons of Corry, Pennsylvania, visited her sister, Mrs. John Q. Peer, who lived a mile from Mr. Hanlen’s home. She came in on the first railroad train into Winfield. The young people met and on December 6, 1883, they were united in marriage.
In 1893 the Hanlen’s moved to Winfield. Mr. Hanlen entered the real estate, loan and insurance business and later formed a partnership with Thomas H. Harrod that extended over a period of more than 30 years. He became a stockholder and direc­tor of the First National bank and president of the Rock State bank.
Mr. and Mrs. Hanlen were the parents of two children, one of which died in infancy. The other is Homer H. Hanlen, a long time clerk of the city of Winfield.
