See the new announcements of candidates Walter A. Smith, the present Register of Deeds; thinks his chances good, and acts accordingly. W. H. Dobyns and Frank Hunt are also in the field for that office, and J. M. Pattison and Joseph Hart for Sheriff. They are all good boys, but we must say we go the straight ticket; the one at the head of our columns on the second page.

There seems to be some trouble among the old officers and the newly elected who were to have changed last Monday. The Sheriff, J. M. Patterson, and the Register, W. A. Smith, claim that they were elected for two years, and had only served one year of their term. The newly elected officers, Mr. Parker, Sheriff, and Mr. Paul, Register, claim that the first election was irregular, and that they were elected at the regular election last fall. Mr. Patterson vacated his office on a compromise with Mr. Parker. Mr. Paul and Mr. Smith, both worthy gentlemen, and each believing himself in the right, show a determination to have a decision from the high tribunal of the State.

Among other acquaintances the editor had the pleasure of meeting in the mountains was Walt. Smith, of Colorado Springs, formerly a cattle man and Register of Deeds in this county, and David Lewis, of Denver, who is attending school at the above place. Also, Rev. I. O. Smith, who is following the avocation of selling books. Dave was lively, and apparently doing well. He works at his trade, stone-cutting, half of the time, and attends a commercial school the other half.

At Colorado Springs we met Walt Smith, formerly register of deeds in Cowley. He is “well healed” and full of hope. At present he affixes J. P. to his name. M.

We learn that Walt Smith, an early-day resident of this county and for the last six years sheriff at Colorado Springs, has been appointed United States Marshal for the district of Colorado. Walt was the first register of deeds of this county.
