Note from the President
WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU?
The Cowley County Historical Society Museum is participating in a "Museum Assessment Program" (MAPS). This grant allows a professional to review and assess our museum. Recently we had the director of the Aurora, Illinois Regional Fire Museum, Brian Failing, spend two days reviewing the museum. He is writing a report with recommendations for us to follow. One recommendation that we have taken is to ask what can we do for you? If you are new to town, we can research your new home or building, if you need a place to hold a meeting without a charge, we can be your place. Do you have an event that you need a partner for? Just ask.
Our mission is to "Preserve and share the past with the future." What better way to do that than to reach out to the community and ask what you would like to see in our museum. We would love to reach a broader section of the community. Are you aged 20-40, what can we do to get you more involved with the museum? For minority groups, what can we do to help share your history?
We continue to remain open with our regular hours, Tuesday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Please feel free to contact us at 620-221-4811 or our new email address - museumcchsm@gmail.com

News from Museum Friends
Museum Friends enjoyed an afternoon on the museum lawn in October reading "OLD" clippings from the Winfield Courier. Additional stories from members were shared after reading several of the stories. They also enjoyed "friendly competition" in November as members played the "Cowley County Trivia" game. Teams competed against each other to be named Cowley County History champions!-Cindy Goertz

Hosting other clubs during November
Two P.E.O. chapters held their meetings at the museum during November. Chapter HK enjoyed learning about the art displayed in our gallery.
"Thanksgiving in Cowley County" was the program presented to Chapter CU. The museum was open to both groups to tour at their leisure following their meetings.-Cindy Goertz
A Blast from the Past
History came alive on the museum grounds on Sunday afternoon, September 13 as folks were encouraged to experience life as it was in Cowley County in the early 1900's. Costumed reenactors told stories, a REAL cowboy shared the Cowboy Way with a display and tales from the trail, hands-on demonstrations were led by area artisans, and old-time games and activities were led by the Southwestern Lady Builder Basketball players. The event was featured as a "go to" event on "Good Day Kansas" a daily TV program on KSN.-Cindy Goertz

Celebrating the 200th birthday of the Santa Fe Trail event
Sunday, October 10th, the 200th birthday of the Santa Fe trail was celebrated with an outdoor concert by Jeff Davidson, an accomplished western music performer and historian. Through music and poetry, he told the story of the Santa Fe Trail and the way it influenced the economy, ideology, and heroism of a young nation.

We are currently in need of boys' toys and anything from diverse ethnic groups. We are seeking to add a woman's coat from the 1960's to complete a fashion display.
These businesses support us-won't you support them?

The CCHS's mission is to preserve and make available the colorful history of our county. We also support and encourage activities pertaining to local county history. Our bookstore showcases an assortment of items and local history. The Society also has a fine collection of historical records and vintage photographs.
